For Linux content generation you might want to try Blender

INTRODUCTION

Please try the beta version instead? It's quite a bit better by now. Click here. Also, the Linux version hasn't been updated for years (so many stuff being added, hard to keep up and not a dedicated machine present). Some people run Racer these days under Wine, which seems to work, including Cg shaders and all that. I hope to add a tutorial one day on how that works (I don't know myself really).

REQUIREMENTS FOR V0.5.0 (old stable version)

• I'm using a SuSE 8.0 installation, running Kernel 2.4.10 (4Gb), XFree86 4.0.1 and the nVidia OpenGL drivers (see www.nvidia.com).
• About 64Mb of system memory is recommended probably for the textures and all data. More is always better (256Mb recommended).
• A good 3D card is required; software rendering is too slow. nVidia and ATI these days both work with the executables.

DOWNLOADS

Download the data and binary files (select the type of videocard for the binaries) below and proceed to the installation instructions.

• Linux v0.5.0 data files (8Mb, 30-3-03) (thanks to RapidShare for the webspace; you can also copy over the data files from a Windows installation)
• Linux v0.5.0 binaries (SuSE 7.3, nVidia/ATI, 2Mb, 30-3-03)
• No binaries for DRI drivers; the program was compiled for nVidia and works for ATI with latest official drivers as well.

For sound, you'll need FMod version 3.61. In case FMod doesn't provide the library file, here is version 3.61. Put the file in /usr/lib.

Version v0.4.7 and perhaps later ones are available through binary packages compiled by Uwe Schuerkamp. Note that the mirrors may carry versions for other Linux versions, like Mandrake 8.0 etc. (or other video cards).

INSTALLATION

For a quick installation guide, do the following:

• Untar the data files with 'cd <myracerdir>' and 'tar zxvf rr_data0.5.0.tgz' (the 'z isn't needed anymore these days really; tar autodetects compressed archives)
• Untar the binary files using 'tar zxvf rr_bin_linux0.5.0.tgz'.
• Move into the Racer directory; 'cd racer0.5.0'.
• Run 'bin/racer'. (do NOT 'cd bin' but run from the installation directory, racer0.5.0/)
• Other binaries are located in bin/
