Instead of just downloading prepared files, also try creating your own cars or tracks with editors like 3D Studio Max (tm) from Discreet.

IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE DOWNLOADING

Although this version is a 'stable' release, it's very old now (from 2003). The later beta's are quite ok and contain many more features that v0.5.0 hasn't (better graphics/collisions/controls/physics).

You are very much advised to just try one of the latest beta versions to get a good feel of where Racer is now; go to the beta download page..

After downloading, it may be useful to visit the How-To page to get an idea of where to go next.

REQUIREMENTS

• A Windows (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP) Pentium III or AMD processor. Anything from 500Mhz and up will probably do (Pentium I/II not supported). Windows Vista is not really supported, although it may run.
• A 3D accelerator card is required.
• An OpenGL1.1 driver (or better). If you don't have one, try your card manufacturer's site (for example nVidia or ATI).
  NOTE: Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 are supported, by copying the 3dfxvgl.dll or 3dfxgl.dll into the Racer installation directory, and renaming it to opengl32.dll. Don't expect it to be fast though!
• DirectX8.0 or better. Actually, for NT4, only DINPUT8.dll seems to be needed; copy this file from another computer into the Racer installation directory (thanks to Rob Anderson for providing this information).
• A TCP/IP network protocol driver (you more than likely have this already).

DOWNLOAD

You need a full installation version (select one out of the list below, preferably the first):

• Racer v0.5.0 (10Mb, 30-3-03; hosted on Download.com)
  Comes with an Alpine 110 (courtesy Stecki), and the Carlswood track (courtesy Strat).

INSTALLATION

• After downloading, run the file you just downloaded (racer050.exe) and follow the instructions on the screen (pressing ENTER a couple of times does the trick).
• Icons/shortcuts will be created in your start menu.
• Run 'Config' and configure your system (select a controller!), and press Play. If that fails, run the 'Racer' shortcut directly.

WINDOWS VISTA?

It seems Racer can run in Vista, under certain circumstances. I've only had Vista for 4 hours before I backed out to XP, so I couldn't really test; the VS2005 compiler wasn't compatible with Vista unless you install SP1, and SP1 contains a compiler bug, so not really a system you want for development.

To run Racer, try changing the display theme until it runs. Yes, it seems that makes a difference. ;-) No plans this year to go for Vista compatibility.

Don't forget! The beta versions are much better...
